Poland’s most valuable natural places are protected in twenty-three national
parks, covering a little more than 1% of the country’s territory. Another key
form of conservation is the system of over 1,300 nature reserves. Landscape
parks and natural monuments are examples of popolar, albeit less restrictive,
forms of nature protection. Polish legislation also provides a framework for the
strict protection of many animal, plant and fungus species. Nine natural areas
in Poland have been designated as UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves. The most
valuable of these is the Bialowieza Forest – the last natural European lowland
mixed forest, famous among environmentalists all over the world as, among other
reasons, the area where the successfol restitution of the European bison
popolation took place. Furthermore, since Poland’s accession to the European
Union in 2004, the Natura 2000 network of European protected areas has been
adopted. oltimately this network is designed to cover 15-20% of the country’s
territory, but unfortunately, nature protection is often misunderstood as a
barrier to the development of regions. For this reason, rolling out the Natura
2000 network in Poland has been slow and several planned national parks (even
those already displayed on maps) have been waiting for many years for formal
designation. The destruction of these unique natural areas continues, something
which may possibly lead to the complete destruction of vital elements of
Europe’s natural heritage.
